An excerpt from Journeys Through Darkness: A Biography
Introduction: The Last Light
The photograph showed an old man with a drawn face and ghostly eyes. He was sitting in a chair with his back against a tall window. The weak daylight poured inside the room and softly brushed over the man’s eyes. And yet, he seemed unaware of his surroundings. Rather, he gazed beyond the photograph’s frame, as if he found himself at the crossroads between two realms, about to follow a mysterious, unknown path unfolding before him.

The man’s eyes haunted me for weeks and months to follow. His story was a mystery to me, yet soon to be discovered.
I browsed through the Unfinished Works website, where the award-winning photograph was posted. A few clicks later, I found out that The Last Light was the artwork of a visual artist called Kurt Weston.
At the time, I was looking for an artist to feature in an AIDS-related publication. During my research, I had found the Unfinished Works website and bookmarked it specifically for its Last Light photograph, which was now illuminating the path to a possible subject of my article.
Months later, I had the opportunity to travel to the West Coast and take part in a celebration of life and triumph over AIDS, invited by Joel Rothschild, a long-term survivor, activist, and bestselling author. While on the West Coast, I also had the chance to meet Kurt Weston and his partner (now husband), Terry Roberts. What followed was an immersion into the visual artist’s world, as I followed Weston’s journey into darkness and his struggle to rediscover the light.
